This American Life Episode Gets Made Into a Movie

On the week before This American Life airs their second dive into the Giant Pool of Money, they’ve decided to air one of my favorite episodes ever, “The Fix is In“. It’s about a food additive company involved in a global price fixing scheme and the informant that helped the FBI bust the companies involved.

I figured they decided to air it this week to lead up to the story about the economy, to show what happens when bad people decide to team up to screw over the world.

Apparently, Ira and company decided to air the episode because there’s a movie coming out about Mark Whitacre, the informant. The movie is called (obviously) “The Informant!“. That exclamation point is theirs, not mine.

It stars Matt Damon and is supposed to be pretty good. I’m going to try to make some time to see it this weekend, and if I do, I’ll report back. Have any of you already seen it?

I saw this movie and was very disappointed. It seemed to teeter between satire and serious, but used effective elements of neither to tell it’s story. The music ESPECIALLY pulled me out of the story – not really enhancing anything but the color of the carpet.

“This American Life” nailed the story. Perhaps it would have been better to not know the story going in.
