Missing: 50 years’ worth of unnecessary words.

Today is the 50th anniversary of Strunk and White’s “Elements of Style.” Or so I heard on “Morning Edition.”

I adore the book. It’s short; it’s my Bible. Kerry prefers the AP Stylebook, and sure, that’s a great book, too, but I’m pretty sure that the AP finds “Elements of Style” superior.

Except when it comes to how you make a word ending in “s” possessive. In which case I have to side with the AP.

One more case in which I totally have to seriously completely disagree with, like, the book that I like, “the Elements of Style” is that too many people like the whole entire “Omit unnecessary words” thing too much.

Pancake.
