Texas uber-festival South By Southwest starts next week, and my plans are the same as they’ve been every year. Hang out in Memphis, a mere 10 hours away from Austin, and wish I had been able to go to SXSW to hear some awesome new bands, as I’m in a musical rut.
Thankfully, NPR is going to hook a girl up. “All Songs Considered” has a SXSW preview up. There’s also a free music sampler that’s available on iTunes.
Memphis is a cool place to live during SXSW, because most of the bands from the East coast have to travel through here to get to Austin. And while they’re here, they may as well play another show. Memphis also sends a lot of bands to Texas. We have a surplus, and we’re too nice to keep them all for ourselves.
So, y’all have fun at SXSW. I’ll be here, working, getting married, and being jealous.

You can also legally download a VAST sampler (20GB of music if you add it all up) of SXSW music via BitTorrent here. Not all of it is great, but there’s a lot to experience there.
I found the files via Paul Ford’s article in The Morning News last year, where he separates the wheat from the chaff of 2008. Maybe he’ll grace us with a repeat performance this year.
