Kerry came home tonight wearing black tights, yellow athletic socks, and short burgundy shorts. She was sweaty and banged up. She was grinning as wide as I’ve seen.
Tonight was her first practice with the Memphis Roller Derby.
She’s excited, I’m excited, the puppy is excited, but he’s excited about everything, because he’s a puppy.
Now she’s got to pick out her derby name. I like everything she’s thought of, but she’s still got to register her name, so I’m not going to give anything away, except to say that I’m sorry, but “Rory Killmore” is already taken.
So is “Axles of Evil.” Leave it to an NPR host to have a name so geopolitically savvy. Alex Cohen, of the soon-to-be defunct “Day to Day,” skates under that ridicul-awesome nom de guerre contre le terrorisme.
Perhaps one day, the two shall meet in a bout and battle tooth and nail for survival.
But probably not. Memphis Roller Derby is flat track derby. Cohen does banked track.

Hey there! Great to hear Kerry’s discovered roller derby! I work for Vermont Public Radio and play/coach for the Green Mountain Derby Dames as Susan Slamberg, #107.9! I may be in Knoxville during the summer and fall – do you ever play each other?
