Happy Monday, everybody. I’m getting to the recap late as a result of some heavy-duty eating at my house last night, so let’s get to it.

Bob heads to the Conservative Political Action Conference in order to find the future of conservatism. I’m not sure if he saw the future, but he did talk to Johnathan Krohn, a 14 year old conservative author who already sounds like he’s going to grow up to be every bit as vocal and nasally whiny as Rush Limbaugh.
Next up, Bob interviews Vivian Schiller, the new CEO of NPR about the future of NPR and local affiliates in the digital age. Schiller sounds like she’s got a plan to unite the local stations and npr.org -she’s forming a coalition of the willing to test her ideas.
Schiller, like many of us in media, are still trying to figure out how to monetize their product. But one thing I like about her? She went ahead and mentioned it before Bob could ask.
Following the optimistic interview with Schiller, Brooke starts telling the sad story of the Rocky Mountain News’ closing. I’ve been thinking about this a lot, but really, I think that my saying anything wouldn’t be enough. Instead, you should click here and watch the video about the Rocky’s closing. It’ll break your heart. Brooke sounds damn sad about it, too.
Last up, there’s a story on great American cons brought on by the Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme that I really want to like. Reporter Jamie York’s story is formatted as though it belongs “This American Life“. Normally, I adore this storytelling format, but York’s voice is so soothing, and there are so many clips from movies that I’m just kind of bored.
Also, the segment seems really short. The closing music plays longer than usual, and it feels like there was a space to fill that wasn’t big enough for a whole story, but too big to leave as silence. I applaud OTM for taking a risk on a unique story, but I wish it fit in a little better. It just doesn’t really match the rest of the episode or the show’s style.
This recap was written by Kerry, and edited by Matthew, who spent most of the time it took to write this recap reasoning with the dog.
