NPR loves obscure holidays

If we were like other Web sites, we would start a feature called Stuff Public Radio Likes. It would include things like generically foreign hyphenated names, accents that can’t be placed, and obscure holidays.

Today, as you may have figured out from the lack of mail pick-up, was Presidents Day, and true to form, NPR went all out.

WBEZ relived elementary school by making construction paper Lincoln-esque top hats and posing for photos.

A story on Zilly Rosen, the woman who made an awesome mosaic of Lincoln and Obama out of five thousand cupcakes showed up on npr.org (under the diversions tab, natch).

While I was getting ready for work this morning, I heard Renee Montagne getting particularly excited about what would have been on Lincoln’s iPod, if he had one.  Apparently, he liked opera. He probably would have liked Booker T. and the MGs as well.

Today’s coverage was heavily Lincoln-focused, but today would have been his 200th birthday. Still, Talk of the Nation asked listeners to vote for their favorite leader of the free world. Personally, I’m fond of James K. Polk.
