OTM Highlights 12/19: Shoes and Mercy

Happy holidays, everybody. Let’s see what OTM got us for Christmas:

First up, a story about the Iraqi journalist who chucked his shoes at President Bush last week.  The incident has spawned a ton of news coverage, a flash game, and some of Bob’s famous dad jokes. It wouldn’t be Christmas without some dad jokes. While listening to this story, I pictured Bob wearing a holiday sweater decorated with jolly puff-paint penguins.

Next up, Brooke has a story about the power of political phrases. Phrases like “war on terror” and “investment” instead of “spending”.  Will these words outlive the presidency? Guest linguist Frank Luntz doesn’t think so. I think a few will – ones like “war on terror” and “bailout”.  So far, Obama doesn’t really have any of these phrases because, according to Luntz, “he talks in general principles.” Though, right after that, he says “They won’t remember a specific word or phrase, but they will remember a speech and think to themselves, ‘you know what – he touched me there.” And I’m sorry, Mr. Luntz, but that’s what she said.

Brooke and Bob have also been so kind as to give us a story on presidential pardons. There have been a lot of obscure people pardoned over the years, but none more odd than the vampire pardoned by Ulysses Grant. Lupo the Wolf apparently got one, too.

Also this week – Mark W. Felt,  the guy better known as Deep Throat died at age 95.  Brooke also calls him “the Garage freak” in her awesome two-minute obituary. Apparently, he was more than a case for anonymous sources and advocate for parking garage meetings.

Merry Christmas, Brooke and Bob.We raise our mulled wine to you.

We’ll be taking Wednesday and Thursday off.
