Sometimes when I’m visiting npr.org, I find a story that I really wish that I had heard when it aired originally. The reasons vary, but I tend to be more captivated by stories when I hear them in their original context.
This story is one of them.
It’s an interview with Frank Schaeffer that aired on “Fresh Air” yesterday. Mr. Shaeffer is billed as a guy who was an evangelical Christian and a perfect Religious Right kind of guy that grew up and took it all back.
Though Mr. Shaeffer is pro-life, he’s now fighting to keep abortions safe and legal. This kind of story always makes me really happy. These stories are proof that people’s minds can change. That people can realize that what works best for them might not work best for others, which is what tolerance is made of. If Mr. Shaeffer can come around, it gives me hope for other people.
I’ve been thinking a lot about tolerance, especially after watching Jon Stewart talk to Mike Huckabee about gay marriage on Tuesday night’s Daily Show.
It’s like it was Tolerance Tuesday or something. Whatever. The world needs more of those.
