Enter: the Puppy.

 His Master’s Voice

Kerry mentioned it yesterday, but we got a puppy. His name is Henry. He’s a lab/boxer mix, and he looks like a tiny black bear. And he was born on election day.

I want to show you pictures, and I did take some, but I can’t find my camera at the moment. Maybe in a couple days.

Henry was the runt of the litter, and he’s definitely used to having to whine for attention. This morning, I didn’t have to be at work until around one, so Henry and I spent the morning together. I quickly discovered several ways to get him to stop whining. Feeding and letting out worked. The clock-in-a-sweatshirt thing that I didn’t think would work? It totally worked.

What also worked, oddly, was “Weekend Edition’s” puzzle segment with the New York Times’ crossword editor Will Shortz and their own host, Liane Hansen. I was idly flipping through, looking for something to write about when I decided to listen to this week’s puzzle, just to see if I can beat the the contestant. (Not always, but frequently. I’ve got about a 78% success rate going.)

Immediately upon hearing Liane Hansen’s voice, the dog perked his ears up, looked at the computer speakers like he was Nipper, quit his whining, and set his head down on his paws to listen.

I think we picked the right pet.

Ok, you guys better get pictures up soon! We have a new baby too, black lab (may be a mix, unsure as she’s a rescue, but looks lab). Haven’t tried NPR on Lily yet, but she does like internet Chill stations! :-)
