OTM Recap 11/14: Marriage is When We Admit Bob Garfield Was Right

Hi everybody. Brooke is out sick this week, but apparently, she managed to record all of her interviews before going home to some chicken soup and crappy movies. Bob is trying to make up for it by asking us all to imagine him as a stunning brunette. Uh, sure, Bob. Whatever you say.

In the second episode of OTM after the election, it’s nice to see Brooke and Bob tackling other issues. For instance, did you know that the government doesn’t seem to want you to know which institutions your tax dollars are bailing out?

Also, California’s Proposition 8 (banning gay marriage) passed on election night. Apparently, people are weirdly attached to the way the government currently handles marriage. Bob raises an interesting point – should the government even call it marriage? Why not just call a contract between a couple and the government a civil union and then allow people that want to have religious marriage ceremonies to do so?

Alas, when you mention marriage, people get weird (as Matthew and I are noticing). I like to think that by changing the term for a government-recognized union that is available to all people, things might get better. And if people still want to get married outside of the courthouse, let them. It’s just time that the government recognizes all partnerships.

This week’s show includes a few reruns. Brooke speaks to the plight of the car critic (as she did in 2004), and a 2007 story about newspaper hoaxes is re-aired in light of a fake New York Times that hit the streets last week proclaiming the end of the Iraq war. I’m all for the end of the war, I only wish it was for real.

Hopefully Brooke will be feeling better next week. As for us, this recap was written by Kerry. Matthew would take Brooke some soup and girlie mags if he were anywhere close to NYC.
