It’s an uphill battle explaining that Kerry and I aren’t the Radio Sweethearts mentioned above. Those Sweethearts are Bob Garfield, Brooke Gladstone, and The Love That Dare Not Speak Its Name.
That said, we’ve grown to love the title. Okay, we’re sweethearts. Okay, we run a blog about the radio. It may as well be us.
But as of this morning, I have caught wind of a pair of real radio sweethearts, of a level so beautifully and adorably geeky that Kerry and I may have to yield our blog’s title.
Chris and Lisa live in Chicago. Chris decided to woo Lisa by burning her discs of “Radiolab” episodes. The amazing thing is that it worked.
Actually, it’s not that amazing – “Radiolab” is a flat-out amazing program. Still, any woman who wouldn’t love a man who was, as Chris claims to have been, “freebasing” Radiolab probably wouldn’t have been worth his effort.
There’s really no better advertisment for the program, and Radiolab knows it. In fact, they’re actually using this story as part of their pledge drive. Which is one of the least annoying pledge drive tactics I’ve ever heard. It also helps that Radiolab deserves your support.
Kerry and I stayed close with one another during the long-distance portion of our relationship with the help of public radio, but I can’t claim, like Chris and Lisa, that it brought us together.
(short spoiler after the jump)
It’s a shame that they didn’t work out. I wish my best for both Chris and Lisa, together or seperate. Communication is difficult, but having something big in common definitely helps.
