I love “Story Corps” as much as the next girl, but I tend to knowingly avoid it because it’s like the bad boy that you shouldn’t be into but totally are. If you stay away, it can’t make you cry.

A few days ago, I found out about “Radio Diaries” from one of Amanda‘s tweets. “Radio Dairies” is like “Story Corps” in that people are given tape recorders to document their lives. Unlike “Story Corps”, it isn’t sure to make me tear up at inopportune times.
I’m especially fond of the Teenage Diaries series, which reminds me a bit of the fantastic “Mortified” books (they’re collections of hilarious teenage diary entries with comments from the now-adult authors). I especially like the Teenage Diaries because they remind me so much of high school’s emotional tilt-a-whirl (one that’s immortalized under my bed in the form of notes from boys). Be warned – though these stories won’t make you tear up as consistently as “Story Corps”, when you do, you’d better hope you’re around a box of Kleenex and someone who likes to hug you.
One of the things I love so much about radio is its intimacy and its ability to be so profoundly affecting and touching. But damn if I don’t feel awful for pointing you to shows that are certain to make you sob.
