But do they have awesome mustaches?

Y’all, these are tough times. There are all kinds of heavy news events that deserve our full attention right now. But while the rest of the world frets over elections an economies, I’ve been needing something a little different.

Thankfully, I can usually rely on the “Diversions” section of NPR.org to have something to cleanse the palate. Today’s radio sorbet comes in the form of a Mike Pesca story on the World’s Strongest Man competition.

It’s a surprisingly enlightening story – official strong man competitions are owned by a sports marketing company, which seems to be fine with the strong dudes, as many of them first aspired to be strong dudes after seeing competitions on TV. Also, one of the events used to be hanging from a pole (I, like the competition official who described the event, am not quite sure what that has to do with actual strength).

Plus, I like Mike Pesca’s Wild World of Sports. He seems to get assignments he enjoys. Or, he just wants to be Frank DeFord when he grows up. Either way, I kind of hope he at least got to try out some of the strong man events while he was working on the story.
