I’m behind on my podcasts. There was an episode of “All Songs Considered” released on Sept. 29 that I’ve just now got around to. Which surprises me. Kerry and I have been huge Okkervil River fans since last year’s fantastic “The Stage Names” release. This year finds the boys releasing a companion LP, “The Stand-Ins.”
Because Bob Boilen is Bob Boilen, he brought Okkervil River’s main man, Will Sheff in to guest DJ. One of the songs he played was by a band called the Penetrators. The song was called “The Scandalizer,” and it has been stuck in my head since Mr. Sheff hit play.

There was apparently some mystery surrounding the recording, since no one in the studio (Sheff or Boilen) knew anything about it, other than the name and the artist.
Once posted to the All Songs Considered blog, it didn’t take long at all for the mystery to dissolve like early morning fog. All the information was more or less correct, and someone even turned up a link to the closest thing to an official Penetrators Web site: the Web site for Jack “Penetrator” Lipton.
I’d thought the names sounded familiar to me, and I couldn’t quite figure it out. Until browsing their site turned up an interesting detail: one of the Penetrators’ discs was put out by Goner Records, which sits just down the street from me.
Sorry Bob Boilen, sorry Will Sheff – I can’t find any more information about it than that – I’ve seen a lot of Penetrators records, but they’re telling me they’re all sold out now. I’ll let you guys know if I find a copy next time I browse Goner’s stacks. As far as I can tell, though, the studio version of “The Scandalizer” played on the podcast doesn’t seem to have ever been re-released. If I’m wrong, I’ll take it back down. Just ask.

Just listened to the podcast and heard “Scandalizer.” When Will Sheff stated that Scandalizer is proof that there are still things you can’t find out about on the internet, still some mysteries it can’t solve, I thought “I KNOW that can’t be true!” So I googled, therefore I’m here. But before being here, found several other listings of a whole Penetrators album (the Backyard Sessions?). Actually, I am a tiny bit disappointed. It might be nice to think that there are somethings the internet hasn’t touched… But regardless, great find!
