I had started writing this post and it had kind of an awful pun in the first sentence. I proudly showed it to Matthew, who cringed and suggested that I start with my second sentence. A fine suggestion, provided I had thought about what the second sentence would be. Instead, I’ll give you the Reader’s Digest version:
Are you kind of sick of hearing old white dudes talking? If so, NPR had a very musical day today.
This morning, I caught an interview with the incredible Sharon Jones on “Morning Edition”. I can’t gush enough about her record with the Dap Kings, “100 Days, 100 Nights”. The interview sounds a bit like a quick description of a Modern Soul Music 101 class.
Given NPR’s history with playing the music of bands that I like, I’m not sure why I’m always surprised when an artist I recognize and enjoy gets some public radio love.
Also today, Bob Boilen and the nice people over at “All Songs Considered” held a vote for the best year in music ever. Weirdly, the 1980’s got completely shut out. Well, yeah, when those are the records that you choose to represent them. The Replacements, yes. Doveman, no. And what about the Smiths or the Cure? I agree with Bob - the 80’s weren’t that bad - I just want to see a better representation of good 80s music.
Also - there’s a live recording of some of Bill Callahan’s songs (swoon!).
