A couple of years ago, I bought a TV tuner for my computer. I only really use it to watch Nova (and a couple episodes seasons of “America’s Next Top Model”), but I have to confess, it’s been getting more use today. I haven’t even turned the radio on.
I’ve been watching the Olympics.
No, scratch that, I’ve been trying to think of what to say about public radio, while Kerry messes up her knitting because she’s watching Michael Phelps. Not really watching the swimming, but watching Michael Phelps.
It’s not that I haven’t heard NPR’s Olympic coverage. It’s just that today, the radio has been somewhat preoccupied, less with the war between Georgia and Russia than with the fact that Isaac Hayes died.
Five stories on Isaac Hayes’ death. Can’t Carl Kasell just say a few words at the top of each hour and play a few seconds of the “Theme from ‘Shaft?’” Better still, give that job to Daniel Schorr, NPR’s own Isaac Hayes?
So, because I couldn’t be bothered to unplug the TV tuner from my computer (or to tear my eyes from the beautiful HD pictures from China), I just haven’t listened to the radio today. The fact that NPR can’t seem to be bothered to cover something other than Isaac Hayes only confirms that I made the right choice.

Matthew, oh come on. You know as well as I (I work there, but not in anything that has any power) that two of those pieces (Fresh Air and the WXPN music piece) were not produced by NPR.
Have a good morning!

Yeah, yeah, but even at Radio Sweethearts, we conflate ‘Public Radio’ with ‘NPR’ as much as anyone. It’s just erroneous shorthand.
You have a good morning, too!
Are you going to write about that giant mattress that appears to be sitting in the middle of Beijing?
