Scott McDowell from WFMU sent us a link to this posting on WNYC’s jobs listings. I am not qualified. I am applying anyway.
Even though I lack the 10+ years of full-time experience the job requires, and my degree is in creative writing with a poetry focus (not in music composition like they require), what I do not lack is MOXY.
I’ve got moxy to spare, kids.
Also, I know there are people who read this Web site who are qualified, and I wanted to let you know about the opening as well. I really love Radio Lab. I’m sure they’d do better to hire anyone out of a handful of our readership than to hire me.
So go for it. I’ve got moxy to spare, and I’ll share it.
For the record, I’ve posted my cover letter after the jump.
(Also, if anyone knows of entry-level jobs in public radio that would let me telecommute, I need work! Let me know - immediately.)
Hi,
I saw your posting for the position as Radio Lab producer, and though I meet few of the position’s requirements, I could be the guy you’re looking for.
I have a bachelor of arts in English/creative writing, and though it’s not music composition, I am a musician as well–and am quite familiar with Digidesign’s ProTools, Apple’s GarageBand, and the open-source audio editing app, Audacity.
The creative writing degree also endows me with some serious chops in written communication. For instance, did you notice, in the job listing for this position, that you said “Good written communication skills is required?” I wouldn’t have let that stay. I wouldn’t have even finished typing that sentence before I corrected it.
In all sincerity, if you have doubts about my writing skills, my writing has appeared in a few places: McSweeneys.net, Mountain Man Dance Moves: The McSweeney’s Book of Lists, The Broken Plate, and Writing out of the Margins vol. 6. The McSweeney’s appearances come under my pseudonym, William Wolfe.
Under my own name, I write for and help run the geeky Public Radio fan blog, Radio-Sweethearts.com. My girlfriend and co-writer, Kerry, and I are huge fans of Radio Lab (and, owing largely to the Bryant Park Project’s use of the “Emergency Krulwich,” are considering posting a picture of Krulwich next to our fire extinguisher).
As I have just graduated from college this May, I’m still in the habit of working as hard on a project as I need to, in order to complete it on deadline. If that means I don’t see bed for two or three days, then that’s the way it needs to be, and I’ll approach that challenge as readily as possible.
I am currently based in Memphis, Tenn., and I would prefer to telecommute, if that works for you. This means my living expenses are vastly lower, and I’m physically closer to much of the country than the NYC-based staff is. Because of this, and the fact that my experience in this field is minimal, I’d need no more than $30,000 annually.
I have attached my resumé. If any opportunities arise that better suit my experience, please let me know. My love for your program is deep, and I would love to be involved in any way possible.
with warm regards,
Matthew Trisler

If only Jad and I could bond over a shared love of Stars of the Lid (the horns on the latest record are sublime!), I’m sure he would ignore my limited experience and lack of “bachelors of music composition” (as if such a thing exists anywhere other than idyllic Oberlin!). I WAS the producer of 120 Minutes at MTV for a couple years, that’s JUST like public radio, right? Also, Jad & Krulwich, if you’re reading this, please come on my radio show. It will be way meta: RADIO ABOUT RADIO. Imagine! Invited on a blog about RADIO. Just, wow. While we’re on the topic. Why has there not been a Radio Lab episode on radio? Not on THE radio, but on the Communication Medium of Radio? Guess what? I’LL PRODUCE IT.
Wait, we have a fire extinguisher? If not, we need one.
I’ll build a theremin, and I’ll gush about Tesla! Actually, there was a really cool Studio 360 not long ago about the same thing. Tesla and crazy geniuses.
Yes, Radio Lab is a great program. Listened to their “War of the Worlds” episode the other week. Sublime.
Good luck!
