As many of you no doubt noticed over the course of April, Matthew is a big poetry-loving dork. He did a fun weekly series of posts on poetry featured on Writer’s Almanac. A few of you know that I’m kind of a little poetry dork.
Though both of us adore poetry, his is usually relevant and touching and good whereas mine is loud, silly, and reflects the fact that all I want to be when I grow up is Jay-Z.
When I finally got around to listening to the Bryant Park Project this afternoon, I was completely charmed by their interview with Kenneth Goldsmith, a guy who makes poetry by re-typing entire editions of the New York Times and transcripts of television weather reports.
Mike Pesca does the interview. I want to like him, I really do, but I miss Alison Stewart. He’s kind of like Alison’s kid brother.
During the interview, he seems really focused on the transcript of the Yankees game. He has to know which game it is, who was playing, and on and on. I do like that Mike Pesca (whose name I always have to type in full) is asking the questions that everyone is thinking about rather than the ones that he thinks he should ask. That’s something that this show consistently does well.
And I really like Kenneth Goldsmith now, though, if for no other reason than he insists that we shouldn’t read his books. Now I kind of want to, especially after he reads from one of the traffic poem.
“Weather” is on Amazon, as is “Traffic” and “Day”.
