It’s the end of May, and once again, the Eurovision song contest has come and gone. And just like last year, those of us unlucky enough to live in the U.S. were unable to watch it (save for on grainy YouTube videos like this one by Latvia’s Pirates of the Sea who seem to have learned just enough English to write a hilarious song about pirating).
There are a lot of things to love about Eurovision - sequins, costumes, transvestites, singing adults dressed up as mythical monsters and pirates. The whole thing is more camp than a row of tents.

Also, this is like a combination of the Olympics and American Idol, complete with semi-finals, finals, text message voting, and voting blocks.
Since NPR is so wonderfully focused on world issues that really matter, it’s only logical that they would cover my favorite thing that I’ve never actually seen. One story on Eurovision was enough to make my whole morning, but the second was enough to send me over the edge in a fit of Yankee jealousy.
Please note the serious with which the geopolitical ramifications of Eurovision are covered in the Morning Edition story.
