While I was listening to the housing crisis episode of “This American Life” this morning (which, sorry guys, didn’t clear it up for me at all), something unusual happened. Mid-episode, a quick ad aired for a new Chicago Public Radio show called “Sound Opinions”.
It’s a music show hosted by music critics Greg Kot and Jim DeRogatis. I’m listening to it for the first time right now, and there are some things that I’m noticing. First up – the photography on the Sound Opinions Web site is great. Part of that could be the picture of Saul Williams, one of my favorite poets. Dude is way skinnier than I thought he would be.
The point is, I’m listening to a recent episode, and I’m already in love. All of the geeky fan-boy-ness that I love about Bob Boilen is there, but without the old-dude-trying-too-hard thing that Boilen does. These guys love music, and listening to their show reminds me of curling up on my couch with new issues of Paste, Harp, Magnet and Under the Radar.
Seriously, I want to have a beer with these guys. They just said “they’re doing Serge Gainsbourg re-imagined by Stereolab”. They play rock doctor! They like good music! The way they talk about records reminds me of Matthew and I, who can make it about five minutes in the same room before we start talking rock’n'roll.
I’m rocking a 16 year old girl-sized crush on these guys and this show. They can come play rock doctor with me anytime they want. You can find the podcasts here.
And um, Jim and Greg, if you’re ever in Memphis, come by R/S HQ. I have a single by the Pleasure Seekers called “What a Way to Die” that you have to hear.
