In the wake of the Virginia Tech shootings last year and the shootings in Illinois this year, some students are pushing to be allowed to carry guns on campus, the Bryant Park Project reports.
I live in Memphis. In the last year, there have been several minor (if there is a such a thing) school shootings here. A university of Memphis football player was killed on campus. Several high schools have had students injured in ridiculous fights by their gun-toting classmates.
Now college students want to be armed because it will make them feel safer?
Maybe I just don’t get it. I was under the impression that academic institutions were supposed to be safe public environments that fostered learning and self-betterment.
I have a hard time believing that being in class with a bunch of armed undergrads would make me feel any safer.
Is there some vital pro to this issue that I’m missing?
